A few days ago, Jamin Warren over a the PBS Game/Show asked the question if FPS games were evolving. He said that Gone Home, Portal, and The Unfinished Swan were all "FPS games" but players didn't really need to "shoot anything". His argument ignores the simple fact that FPS is an already evolved subgenre of "the shooter" where perspective (first person) modifies play and warrants a new genre.
